one - introductory prose

I am to understand that the writings here correspond to others in this county, and that by writing within I am also sharing my words with others. I dare say it brings to mind the sort of chance acquaintance that I might dream of and that my mother would find absolutely nonsensical. What better way to hear the news of town? And yet, also, what better way to be known by strangers and to chance that the wrong sort of person might come to know you? I feel as though I have inherited a small fortune, that so many people should know so much about me.

Though I have become somewhat acquainted with my residence here, I must admit that I had not expected to be aboard a ship such as this, or to find my room in such familiarity. I do hope you will forgive my candor. My name is Miss Elizabeth Bennet and I am quite at my leisure to meet any person who should desire to call upon me.

I might agree that while each person may have tales of their own and an interest produced, no person is entirely without fault. I only mean that there are people whose acquaintance it might be better not to have made, including perhaps those who would venture an argument without the grace to offer introductions first.

I am not sure it is such a blessing to be known so publicly, Miss Bennett. Although, personally, I find it quite liberating to be able to write so publicly, I still find one must be careful what one writes.

I would advise against meeting anyone who desires so. Not all of them have the best of intentions. I should, of course, introduce myself; I am Colonel Edward Sexby, but feel free to address me by my last name, everyone else does.

I am not certain I understand the gentleman. I do, however, speak as I have always spoken and I dare say that I am more well educated than most and might even venture to claim myself proficient with a manner and selection of words wholly unknown to many of the sort of person I might find here.

This whole thing with the journals is a bit weird, isn't it? I'm still getting my head round it myself - it's good, though. You get to hear what people are doing and really, unless you live in a hole in the ground you always risk meeting the wrong sort of person. So I wouldn't say there's anything much bad about it.
